.mkv files?

its been a while since ive downloaded some movies and i recently did and they all .mkv files. kan someone explain what it is and what happened to .avi files lol

i don't know what it stands for but i have some .mkv files and they seem to be much higher quality than .avi considering the size of the files..... just a better format i suppose.... if your comp can't play them there are media players you can download that will.... hope this helps lol

It stands for Matroskva file (or something very close to that), and you can play them with the VLC media player, .avi files are still around too but are increasingly being crowded out by mp4's. I personally try to avoid .mkv files as they are unplayable on the Xbox and we play our movies through the xbox on an external HD (hard drive). Nothing wrong with them at all tho, it's just a different file format.
